FAQ

Who are the producers?

The organic sesame and peanuts used in Roots Myanmar's products are produced by a farmers cooperative, made up of farmers from 15 villages in Magwe Region in the Dry Zone of Myanmar. The cooperative has been working with the Network Activities Group to reintroduce organic farming practices for a number of years. What was missing was access to a market for the organic produce. This meant that while the farmers had the know-how and a desire to switch to organic production, it was not economically feasible to do so. In partnering with Roots Myanmar, farmers from the cooperative are now able to grow organic crops with price guarantees.

How much do producers receive?

As organic crops typically yield less than chemically produced crops, as well as being more labour intensive, there are economic disincentives for farmers to make the switch to organic production. To counteract these disincentives, we offer an acreage guarantee price to farmers. This means that farmers receive the same amount of money for their organic crops as they would have for their non-organic crops, regardless of the yield.

What do you mean by organic?

The farmland on which the crops for Roots Myanmar products are grown have been worked with organic methods since 2013, to gradually prepare the land and minimize the residues of chemicals, used in previous times. Starting from 2016 the crops from these farmlands are used in our organic product line.

The peanuts and sesame crops on these farmlands are grown using indigenous organic methods from soil fertilization, to pest repellents, fungus prevention and plant nutrients.

The harvested seeds and nuts are tested to ensure food safety (See ‘Are your products safe’ section below).

Each nut and seed in our products are traceable and we work directly with millers to ensure that the organic seeds are processed separately in the hulling and and roasting facilities.

Are your products safe?

Roots Myanmar supports the growing food safety movement in Myanmar and we work closely with the Food Science and Technology Association FoSTA (Myanmar) to contribute to improving consumer knowledge and practice of food safety and hygiene. Both the raw produce and the finished products are tested through the laboratories of the Small Scale Industry Department (SSID), Ministry of Cooperatives.  As food testing and certification are evolving in Myanmar, we aim to be in the forefront of these developments to ensure that our products are always brought to you fresh, hygienic, safe and chemical free.

Why is a fair price?

As well as being more labor intensive, organic crops typically yield less than chemically produced crops, therefore there are economic disincentives for farmers to farm organically. Working with farmers who want to switch back to organic production, Roots Myanmar offer an acreage guarantee price. This means that farmers receive the same amount of money for their organic crops as they would have received for their non-organic crops, regardless of the yield. As a consumer, you support the farmers by paying a fair price for your product.

Why is there oil on the top?

We frequently receive this question from our customers and retailers. Oil on top of peanut butter and tahini is a good sign and indication of how our products are naturally made free from additives. Since  sesame seeds and peanuts are oil based, the grinding process brings the oil out, and it is the oil that makes the peapnut butter and tahini so deliciously creamy! At room temperature, the liquid will rise to the top, but don’t throw out the oil (!) otherwise the peanut butter and tahini will become too dry. We recommend to simply turn your jar upside down and leave it for a while, then flip it back up. Your peanut butter and tahini will then be perfect to use.
