U Thaung Way
Peanut and sesame farmer

U Thaung Way is a farmer from Magwe region and has been growing peanuts and sesame seeds for over 40 years. He used to use chemical fertilizer for his farming and found that it was extremely difficult to sustain his farm as he had to buy more and more chemical fertilizer each year. Finally, he had reached the point where he was not making any money at all.

After attending a workshop provided by a local organization in 2010 on how to farm without using chemicals, he totally stopped using chemical fertilizer on his land, after understanding how pesticides and chemical fertilizer had damaged his land. He learned that even though traditional farming is labor intensive, the hard work pays off. He now generates sustainable income from his farm and grows organic healthy crops.

He has been attending trainings whenever possible to learn more and always shares his knowledge with other farmers. He is now one of the leaders of Organic Farming in his township and is helping other farmers to return to traditional farming.
